Back on track

March 16th, 2009

One week ago: Yes, since two weeks I started web designing again! I made multiple concepts for Needlz but none of them seem to have the right potential. I don’t know why, but the content always looks off compared to the rest of the layout. So now I’m doing a sort of “research” on how to improve the content and the user-friendliness.

What I want to achieve in the new concept for Needlz: is giving the visitor the opportunity to gain the most relevant information without scrolling the page. This is because the average visitor decides his interest in a website in less then a second.

The most relevant information in my case, are the services I offer and what my website is related to. I think a catchy slogan will be nice to give an idea what the website is about. As for the services, I just list them combined with a small explanation.

After putting these aspects in the page I also want to give them a short text about Needlz and some previews to get an idea of our work.

March 16th
I finally managed to make a start at a catchy layout, I imported all of the aspects as listed above. So now it comes to the small details and fine tweaking to make the website ready for coding.

I would like to hear what you guys think of the preview (colors, shapes etc.). I’m also very curious on what you guys think of the aspects I listed (what to scrap, what to add?). And if you don’t like it at all.. just say so! ;-)

Cheers,

Blog on a low pit (+update)

July 4th, 2008

The blog is on a low pit at the moment because of my summer holiday. I’m alot outside now chillin’ and playing soccer outside with my mates. The reason I’m at home now is because I’ve had a sunburn last tuesday and I look like a frikkin’ discoball -that’s what you get when you’re covered in aftersun haha-.

O yeah… I didn’t submit the maffia layout -see previous post- because I wasn’t satisfied with it. So I’ll probbably finish it when I’m in a boring mood.

I also worked on Needlz for a bit today. I conciderd removing the background and make the layout strechable, but when i finished this small step in Photoshop it didn’t had the flow I thought it would get. So I only made some minor adjustments and step by step I’m getting closer to the final layout of Needlz.

Have a good day all,
Cheers!

Update (5/07/2008): Today I finally made a breaktrough in the Needlz layout! After I did some major changes in the content and the header I managed to create a footer that goes along with the rest of the layout. The next step is to make the content more attractive because it’s a bit empty right now.

WIP Maffia Contest Layout

June 20th, 2008

The last few days I’m working on a maffia layout for an open contest, based on the japanese maffia Yakuza. The contest holder didn’t gave any directions for the design or the content so I’m tasting the dark a bit. Yesterday I couldn’t get a decent style to work for this subject, but after some sleep today I finally found a style that works out fine. The layout isn’t finished yet, neither can I tell when it’s finished the deadline is saturday nextweek (28 june) so probably then I can show it to you guys.

As for needlz I finally found the menu to fit in better into the layout, but now the footers forms a problem so that will take alot of time to think over and over.

Cheers

Needlz Project: second preview!

June 13th, 2008

As I told you yesterday I was planning to continue to process of Needlz again. But first I completed the coding work for my client (live view: http://www.needlz.nl/niepoth/). After that was finished I had some spare time and began to work on, my main project, Needlz again. The banner is still a bit empty, but it’s quite hard to add detail to the banner while aiming for a calm look. And as for the menu, it’s just a pain in the … -well you know what ^.^-. But all the other aspects in the layout are mostly complete, maybe I need to make some minor adjustments after I’m done with the banner (and menu) but consider it as done.

As for the preview on the left side of this post, it contains a piece of the background, banner and content. I would like to hear your opinion on what you can see so far (and maybe some tips for the aspects that are listed in this post?).

~ Thanks for your view

Basing client + Needlz update

June 12th, 2008

Hi there visitors, I’ve been very busy this week that’s why this post is a bit late. But it’s not the end of the week yet so fair is fair -muahaha-. So I will quit the chitchat and give you an update of what I’m busy with the last few days.

Currently I’m basing a layout for a client, but I encounter some bugs in my CSS & XHTML coding which are hard to find. So at the moment I’m struggling with the nasty style-sheet bugs hoping to find a solution, but luckly enough there are alot of people with similair problems on the internet.

The Needlz project is also coming along, this week I’ll take some time to tweak the layout a bit more. The navigation is up for a remake and the header needs some more detail in it. I’m also asking your opinion in one of the upcomming weeks to decide the logo I’m going to use for Needlz.

So I’ve enough to do the upcomming weeks, also the final coding result for my client will be posted in an update. Thanks for reading and there will be a post concerning Needlz next week.

UPDATE: I managed to fix the bugs I was talking about, for the live version of the website I coded for my client see needlz.nl/niepoth

Needlz Project

June 3rd, 2008

Needlz is the main project of me and my brother Dave we mostly focus on webdesign and coding. But we never brought our website online while we made a couple of concepts for it. The main reason is that we both had rough periods at school. But now we’re done with that and I started to create a whole new concept.

In this new concept I want to use our old logo we used at the beginning of Needlz. I actually lost the psd-file for this logo, but that isn’t a big problem because I want to make it vectorized anyway. So a couple of hours ago I found this old image of the logo -including bad grammar, what a failure…- and did a remake of it.

So with this new logo I’m currently working on the newest concept for Needlz, be stung. I started with this yellowish color, but this didn’t really fit to my idea about the company so now I’m working in a more harmonic blue color. I’m very curious about what you guys think of the colors I’m showing you in this sneak preview on the left.

Should I continue with these colors or should I take a whole other approach?

So within the next couple of weeks I’m working on this new concept and mostly on the banner, because I can’t seem to fill up the emptyness. Also the navigation needs some more attention, so stay tuned for some fresh updates!

UPDATE: frontpage needlz.nl updated

Bye school, welcome vacation!

May 27th, 2008

Bah! After studying hour after hour I’m finally done with my school exams. It took me a whole lot of time to study -I had six subjects though…- while the exams just took a couple of hours. But enough about school now, I’m glad i can celebrate my vacation now and enjoy the weather -what the.. where did the sun go?!- .

Ofcourse I didn’t make any designs the past two weeks, simply because i had to study as you can read above. But I did make some other graphics while i was taking a pause. Don’t expect they’re great I was just messing arround since I only had a little spare time to create them.

The first one I want to show you is the ‘Before & After” image. This image originally was an old grey photo, that I colored with the use of blending masks and brushing on to upper layers wich the use of the layer setting Hue.
The hard part for this effect is the use of colors, because it must look realistic and we don’t wanna end up with a human looking Smurf.

The 2nd image I want to show you is a sort of typography from my nickname “Joeys” . I saw alot of people making some texts/letters with the use of 3D. So i saw this tutorial at psdtuts and there i red that they made use of a program called Xara3D. So next thing I did was downloading the trial version of the program. At the first minutes I was messing arround, because I didn’t want to read any tutorials. I chose for the option to give my own flow to the image. The purple/first image was the first result after messing arround with the colors for some time -this was before the exams actually-.

So this weekend I was tweaking a profile page of mine and i needed a new background. I needed a more “male” version instead of the outstanding purple, so there I had another mission… I tweaked the image multiple times the last few days and finally came up with a good result. As I mentioned it’s a background-image for a profile page of mine, so as a “stand-alone” image it won’t look that representative.

Well this is it for now, next week you can expect a work in progress from a logo for my own. I hope you enjoyed reading this post and stay tuned for a new post!

Cheers!

Resurrection of the BLOG!

May 13th, 2008

Hi there visitors, after months I’m breathing some air into this blog again. I’ve been very busy lately with school, social life, gaming and of course designing. In this time I’ve had a very long designers block, but my inspiration has been refreshed again -maybe it has something to do with the nice weather..?- so I got some new works to show you lads.

To celebrate the nice weather, the upcoming summer and also the fresh start of this blog, I threw this new wordpress theme online with some fresh en enlightening colours.

P.S. I’ll be a bit busy the upcoming two weeks because of my school exams, but after that I’ll blast you with some new designs.

Update: The blog has been upgraded to the newest version of WordPress 2.5.1.

Microsoft lowers price Xbox 360!

March 10th, 2008

Xbox 360 LogoLater this week the Xbox 360 will be lowered in price. This counts for all versions from the console. De cheapest version, the Xbox 360 Arcade, will be the cheapest console on the market because of the new prices.

The fall hasn’t been officially announced by microsoft yet, but there are made from the newest folders from gamestores like Intertoys and Bart Smit here in Holland. Both stores are lowering their Xbox 360 Arcade prices from 279,95 euro to 199,95 euro. Intertoys has told that the new prices from the Xbox 360 Premium and Xbox 360 Elite will be announced on their site in the near future.

The price lowering was a part of the strategy that Mircrosoft already had in mind since June 2007. Microsoft told us a price of 250 dollar or 199 euro back then as an ideal price for a gameconsole. The new prices will be introduced at 14 March in Holland.

Media Player update 2

November 30th, 2007

Since the last post (see “Media Player update”) I’ve added a tree-component which shows all the videos in the folder ‘media’. Also on the in the last topic about the mediaplayer i got two people who gave me some tips to improve my player.

The button to go full screen is now on the left of the mute button. And as extra feature you also can make the media player go full screen by double clicking the video itself.

I made the control-bar a bit bigger so when you hover it in full screen the control-bar doesn’t suddenly disappear when placing the mouse at the bottom of the screen.

Click here to watch the media-player.

Well I’m done with the media player for now. All there’s left to do is the skinning part, but were still busy with the design. I will now continue with other parts of the application, more information about this will be here next week. So be sure to check this blog out!!
